About Health’s Kitchen and Sylvia Burnett Elbaz, M.S., C.N.S.
Health’s Kitchen provides the missing link for individuals who wish to improve their eating habits because of doctor’s orders or personal motivation, but don’t know how or where to begin. “We show you how to shop and how to chop.” says Elbaz, who has a Master’s Degree in Nutrition, is a member of the American College of Nutrition and holds Nutritionist licenses in several states. She has taught at Nassau Community College and Kingsborough Community College, and was a college textbook reviewer for Mayfield Publishing Company. Ms. Elbaz taught science courses for ten years in New York City Public Schools and prior to that was a bacteriologist and food sanitarian for the New York City Department of Health. In addition to her private practice as a nutritional consultant, she lectures frequently at health clubs and for community organizations.
Ms. Elbaz has been interviewed on TV by CNN, UPN9, TV Global of Brazil, TV News at 10 Tokyo and on radio by Gary Null (WBAI) and South African Broadcasting Corp., Capetown (Woman Today)
In contrast to most cooking shows where finished dishes are prepared in advance for the camera, Ms. Elbaz takes the viewer step by step from start to finish. “What you see is what you get,” she says. Who gets it is the crew! They drool till the videotaping is over and they can start eating. Some have reported that they are starting to change their own eating habits. Even the proprietor of the Energy Center, where the program is videotaped, was so impressed with the taste of the food that he hired Ms. Elbaz to teach a series of cooking classes at the Center.
Ms. Elbaz credits her cooking success to the inspiration of Annemarie Colbin, founder of the Natural Gourmet Institution for Food and Health.
Since Ms. Elbaz’s interest in the cuisine of many ethnic groups was a natural extension of her life-long appreciation of international music and dance, HEALTH’S KITCHEN also includes the added spice of culturally appropriate music. An accomplished guitarist, she also wrote and performs the program’s theme song.
